A slightly more up market choice than Prison Island, chapwani, or Grave island, is the site of a luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar and restaurant are permitted. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims who lost their life due to the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg during World War One have been buried here or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers.
Your heart may pray for those departed souls yet, it’s interesting to wander around the graveyard and make out the ages and causes of death of the servicemen. Your tour would reveal that – many died out of tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers. It is not that Chapwani would leave you with a heavy heart. You can spend some pleasurable moment in it’s beautiful white sandy beach where a small population of duikers (a type of miniature antelope) live. You can even encounter here some interesting birdlife.
